Under 10’s Home in on Consecutive Titles

Farsley Celtic v Rothwell Juniors

Sunday 24th February 2008

Conditions were horrendous for this fixture but this didn’t deter the boys as they homed in on their second title in two years.

Match 1

Although the boys began brightly in the first game they nearly succumbed to a counter attack but Aaron produced a brilliant reflex save to snuff out the danger. Rothwell continued to press but were denied on several occasions before Oliver finished off a winding run with a deft shot passed the keeper. This was quickly followed up by a crisp half volley from Jordan and a smart control and finish from Oliver to give Rothwell a 3 – 0 lead at half time. After the break Rothwell continued to play the expansive free flowing football that dominated the first half. Rothwell increased their lead through a driving run and fierce shot into the bottom corner by Jack and another deadly finish in the box from Jordan. Rothwell were now rampant and a goal kick was expertly taken down by Cody and blasted past the stranded keeper. Not to be out done, Tom collected the ball, beat his man and expertly found the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Although the game was over as a contest the boys still continued with wave after wave of attacks with Lewis and Ryan going close, until the referee blew the whistle to end this excellent display and confirm a 7 – 0 victory.

Match 2

The opening few minutes were dominated by tough tackling and strong forward running by Rothwell. This paid dividends when after one such break, Shane found himself on the edge of the box and dispatched with the oncoming defender and sweetly finished past the waiting keeper .Rothwell continued to press and forced a corner that was delivered with precision accuracy by Ryan and neatly finished by George, to take the boys into the break with a 2 – 0 advantage. Rothwell continued to dominate after the break with Matty being a spectator for much of the match. In contrast their keeper was continually peppered with shots from Connor, Rhys and debutante Cameron but he held firm, as did Lucas and James who snuffed out any danger from the Farsley frontline. With the game in the bag the boys continued to play the ball about with confidence and never looked likely to surrender their advantage and came out worthy 2 – 0 winners.

With 6 points in the bag the boys waited to hear the results of the other fixtures in their league in hope that they would be confirmed as champions. However results didn’t go their way and they still need 1 point to be mathematically sure of the title. Good luck next week in the title decider with St Josephs, the only team that can catch them.
