Following an epic draw against Churwell last weekend, Rothwell Juniors traveled to Garforth Villa looking for a win to boost their pressure on league leaders, Wortley. Could the vice captain, Jack Fisher fire up his players to perform like they did against Churwell?
The opening ten minutes of play saw both teams trying to gain control in midfield but gradually Rzonca, Kelly, Fisher and de Csernatony began to gel together and find spaces to create passes to strikers Dalgreen and Rothery who began to cause problems in Garforth Villa’s eighteen yard box.
Rothwell seemed the most dominant on the pitch and any pressure from the Villa strikers were swiftly dealt with by the Juniors solid defence of Scott, Massey, Marshall and an impressive Blacker, it seemed that keeper Ward would have a quiet game. The wind was against us and a goal this half would set us up for a win. Alas this was not to be and the half time whistle saw a 0-0 score line – FOR NOW!
Half time changes saw Reynard replace de Csernatony who started to create dominance on the wing. Rothwell continued to use their territorial advantages and kept on applying that pressure. This was rewarded in the 65th minute with a soaring run by Massey to find Kelly who’s controlled cross found Dalgreen who turned the ball into the back of the Villa net. 1-0. That’s more like it boys!
Up the tempo and Villa started to throw everything at Juniors defence but the back boys remained focused in their roles and maintained many timely interceptions until the final whistle.
A well deserved win for our strong spirited Rothwell boys who no doubt will dedicate this one to their absent captain, Tom Fisher and Matty Rhodes.
Well done boys, a well deserved win.
